My name is Jackie Schwarber. I am a five-year breast cancer survivor. Even though I received annual mammograms, and my sister was diagnosed with the disease, I never thought it would happen to me. But I was diagnosed at 41. Everyone said, “That’s young,” but people much younger are getting breast cancer.

If I could encourage women with one thought, it would be: Get the word out! Don’t be afraid to talk about it. Don’t be afraid to ask, “Have you gotten your mammogram?” It can save lives.

If you’ve been diagnosed with breast cancer, support is so valuable. Family, friends, and so many wonderful organizations are there to guide you through this journey. Have a positive attitude, and please know that you’re not alone! I consider every day a blessing and hope that sharing my story will encourage you to talk openly about breast cancer.

Have you gotten your mammogram this year?

My journey started when I found a lump during a self examine.  I called my Gynocologist and they didn't have an appointment for several weeks.  My sister had been diagnosed 3 years earlier and I didn't want to wait that long to see a doctor.  I called my family doctor who saw me the same day.  After the examine she was concerned and suggested I see a surgeon.  I went to see the my sister's surgeon.  I had a diagnostic mammogram which was inconclusive so she performed a needle biopsy.  She would have the results on Friday.  It was a long few days but I thought that I'd have an answer on Friday.  The results were inconclusive so we scheduled a lumpectomy.  My surgery was on Thursday, April 17, 2003.  With my family by my side I went into surgery.  When I woke up she told me I had stage 2 breast cancer.  It didn't seem real but I knew I'd fight and come out on top!  I had my faith and the support of my family and freinds...
