I was only 30 when I learned I had breast cancer. After returning from helping my mom recover from breast cancer surgery I did a self-exam in the shower and the first place that I touched I felt a lump. At first my OB thought it was what they call “rusty pipes” from breastfeeding. Many tests and several months later, I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer. We have a family history of breast cancer but I never thought it would happen to me. When the same cancer came back in the same breast my doctor recommended a bi-lateral mastectomy.

We have a family history of breast cancer but I never thought it would happen to me.

Three years ago I had reconstructive surgery and have had no problems since. I learned that I am stronger than I thought and when I felt that I couldn’t take it anymore, I could. Our children have had the word “cancer” in their vocabulary since they were 1 and 3 so they are not afraid of it. As the inspiring 5-time cancer survivor I met at the Relay for Life says, “If I get it again, I’ll fight it again.” The most important thing is to never give up. Get a 2nd, 3rd or even 4th opinion if you have to. Also reach out to others going through the same thing as they may have ideas that will make your treatment or recovery easier. If you have small children don’t hide it from them, let them help. It’s a hard thing to go through but it really made our family stronger. My husband and children, Haley and Devin, saved my life and I love them more than they will ever know. I would also like to thank my parents for always being there for me. The love and support of family and friends made all the difference.
