My name is Ronnie Hiller. I have worked for PepsiCo for over 10 years. I am a 2 year breast cancer survivor.
I was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2007 during a routine yearly mammogram. There is no history of breast cancer in my family, and I had no reason to think this year would be any different – a clean mammogram. I had not felt any lumps in my breasts, nor had my doctors during my exams.
There is a surreal feeling when the doctors tell you of your diagnosis, and I know I felt as though they couldn’t be talking to me. After discussing all my options and finding a great team of doctors, I had surgery in August 2007, was recommended to have chemotherapy, and completed the last of my treatments in January 2009.
You just have continue to move forward…
I have such a great support system. This includes my family, family friends, friends, and co-workers. After I lost my hair during the chemo, my co-workers decided we should have a Hat Day. Everyone wore a hat of their choice. What a great celebration to show they care. Even people I don't know by name in the building where I work are always telling me what an inspiration I have been. I am a very active person, doing triathlons, cycling, and weight training, and staying active kept me going after my treatments. You just have continue to move forward, and I I have never thought I would do anything but beat the cancer.
I’m a conqueror because I face challenges head on – cancer was just another challenge that I conquered.
