It was in October/November of 2007 that I found a lump on the upper part of my left breast. I went for a mammogram in December and at the end of the month they called me in for a biopsy. I received my result on January third when the doctor told my husband and I that I had breast cancer. I didn’t know much about breast cancer, only that I had yearly mammograms. Unfortunately, I do have a family history of the disease. My Aunt fought for about ten years with breast cancer. Then it spread to her bones and she lost the fight.
Laugh as much as you can. Make your mind go to that place that makes you Laugh.
The doctor gave me a choice between a lumpectomy and mastectomy. I chose to have the mastectomy. I had the surgery in January then started chemotherapy in February. I had 8 treatments. Every other week I went to the Oncology Department sitting with many other people fighting for their lives.
I learned from my mom to have a positive attitude, because being negative is wasted energy. I took my Meds like clockwork, ne
ver forgot or fell behind on them. I watched what I ate and drank- lots and lots of water! I walked around as much as possible for exercise and had lots of family and friends for support. Lots of laughing, it’s the best medicine. Through this experience I learned there are a lot of people that love me and care about me. I learned I need to take better care of myself; I cannot let my weight and health go, like it had when I got cancer. I love giving my time to everyone, but now I need to take a little time for myself.
Some things are hard to get used to- my bones ache and my feet are still numb- but you do get used to it. I will probably never be 100% but I am alive, and that’s a great feeling!
My advice for other women faced with this disease is to believe in faith, hope and yourself. Be strong and positive even when you’re at your worst. There will be better days. Most importantly: Laugh as much as you can. Make your mind go to that place that makes you Laugh.
