My name is Patti C. I have been with Kroger for nearly a year. And I am a 22-year breast cancer survivor.

I am a proud grandmother of five from Wichita, Kansas. I was first diagnosed in 1987 and spent my first five years in and out of the doctor’s office doing needle aspirations and mini-biopsies to track my condition. In 1992, I was presented with three options when surgery was required. I chose lumpectomy and radiation therapy and have been cancer-free for 17 years!

Early detection – the best thing you can do for yourself!

I discovered there are many ways to learn about cancer and cancer-related topics. We made decisions based upon the development and progression of the cancer and I really felt like I was in charge due to my physician’s encouragement. My family was extremely supportive while undergoing treatments and they were willing to do whatever was necessary to help me get through this devastating time and handle the situation. It’s so important to have that. The support, information and all the caring people in my breast cancer program were excellent. And I believe that positive morale is, and was for me, the most important factor in my recovery.

Today, I feel great. My health is good. I enjoy walking two miles almost every day, except Sunday. The Cancer Center contacts me every year to see how I am doing and I still have an exam and mammogram every two years. After 75, I will be able to have exams at my doctor’s office during regularly scheduled visits. I’ve learned to make time for the important things in life. Having peace, contentment and faith makes each day feel like a comfortable friend.
