I always have my yearly physical around my birthday. The year I turned 45 my doctor found a lump in my left breast. He sent me to a surgeon who did a biopsy and found it was cancer. There was a history of breast cancer in my family, but I still didn’t think it would happen to me. After my first treatment I got sick, but I tried to stay positive. You have to take it all in stride and say, "I can do this".

You have to take it all in stride and say, I can do this.

When I heard I had cancer I never thought that this was the end of my life. I thought I better get myself together so I can beat this. There is a hill outside my house and I started to walk up the hill to get my strength back. When my hair started coming out in clumps I told my brother to shave my head so I could move on. My family and doctors were all so supportive. It’s been 11 years and I feel great. Don’t ever give up.
