When I felt a pain in my breast after a day working on some home remodeling, I thought I’d just strained a muscle. At a routine checkup a week or so later, my doctor suggested I get a mammogram. Not only did the test come back positive, my cancer was already in stage two.
Absolutely keep your sense of humor.
That was eight years ago. Since then, I’ve had a full mastectomy, six rounds of chemotherapy, three reconstructive surgeries, many bouts of tears, and lots of something that can help you get through just about anything – laughter. If hadn’t had my sense of humor and we weren’t able to laugh at the most horrible, darkest moments, I’m not sure we would have gotten through it. But thanks to my family, my friends, and my network of caregivers, I had the support to overcome every obstacle along the way.
It’s amazing how strong you can be. The reservoir of women’s strength is almost bottomless. It’s interesting how you can tap into that and not even know you had it in you.
