My name is Maria Galvan. I have been working for Food 4 Less for 4 years. And I am a breast cancer survivor.
I was diagnosed in October 2007 at the age of 37. I was always pretty good about doing my self-exams, and one day, I raised my arm and noticed something. I thought it was just my imagination, but my husband insisted I go to the doctor. I didn’t want to feel it, I wanted it to be my imagination. But, please, don’t ever doubt what you see or feel.
It is so important to keep up with our self-examinations. Listen to your body!
When I was diagnosed, I was scared. I couldn't help thinking to myself—did it spread? All of these awful things come to your mind, but the first thing my surgeon told me was that I was going to be okay. Just those words alone were very powerful—everything's gonna be okay. It’s a long journey. There are a lot of things I have gone through, but I came out with a smile. Of course my husband, children, and co-workers—who were all so supportive—had something to do with that!
It's so important for us women to keep up with our self-examinations. I want women to be aware. I have some co-workers who say they don't want to go to the doctor because they’re scared they’ll find something. But we can’t avoid the issue. Your body tells you when you’re sick—listen to your body.
