I learned that I had breast cancer in 1992; I had reached around the seat and when it touched my breast, it hurt. I went to the doctor and he did x-rays and a mammogram. He then sent me to a surgeon. I didn’t know anything about this disease prior to being diagnosed, and there was no history of breast cancer in my family. My treatment included two lumpectomies and a double mastectomy with implants.

Be thankful for all the good things in life.

What helped me most through my treatment were my family, friends and my daughter. I adopted my daughter while going through treatment! Through this difficult experience I learned to live life and to not put things off – especially your children. My treatment affected some of the things I can and can’t do, but overall I feel good.

My 'words of wisdom' for women now faced with this disease are to think positive and to be thankful for all the good things in life.
