There was no history of breast cancer in my family but I knew it was important to check your breasts once a month and have medical check-ups and mammograms. During a self exam, I found a lump. I set up a mammogram, they did an ultrasound and I was sent to a surgeon. Within two weeks I had a partial mastectomy.
Do your monthly self exams… enjoy life, stop and smell the roses and, don’t sweat the small stuff!
My type of cancer was rare to the breast - adenoid cystic carcinoma. Following surgery I underwent 35 radiation treatments, and numerous scans and blood tests. Now I am tested every three months.
Many things helped me through treatment and recovery: Very good doctors. A family with lots of love and support. Trusting in God. Great friends. I have worked in many Kroger stores and have made many great friends who were there with prayers, cards and support.
Through this, I found out that I’m a stronger person than I thought I was.
Today, I feel great. I still work every day and I thank God for giving me one more day. Now, I take one day at a time.
To others facing breast cancer my advice is to find good doctors that you can talk to and who will answer your questions. And let your friends and family help you – they want to help.
We need to stop and smell the roses, enjoy life and not sweat the small stuff. Life is GREAT and I’m glad to be here!
