My yearly mammogram was overdue and my husband kept reminding me to schedule an appointment. I went and wasn’t surprised to be called back in for a closer look. What was surprising was when the radiologist stated that he wanted an even closer look at one spot. The ultrasound showed a tumor, which was biopsied. I didn’t think much of it until the following Monday, my step-son’s birthday, when I got the call.
A mammogram saved my life
One never knows how you will react when you hear the words, “You have cancer.” I was in shock at the words. I couldn’t even bring myself to say that I had “Breast Cancer” for several weeks.
After two lumpectomies, we still were not able to get all the cancer. There were a few tears, much research and a bunch of humor in the next weeks leading to the decision to have a bi-lateral mastectomy. It was a long road; but with the help and prayers of friends, family and even complete strangers, we beat it!
I was lucky to have had a radiologist who cared enough to give the extra effort. Mammograms are so important for early detection of this terrible disease. Make sure you and every woman you know has an annual exam. It too, could save your life!
