We all need wake up calls sometimes. The wake up call I received in April 2008 changed my life. I had always considered myself a healthy and active person. I was a competitive runner since I was 8 years old. So when my surgeon told me I had breast cancer at the age of 37, I thought I was having a bad dream. It wasn’t a dream. It was a wake up call to tell me that I was entering a new kind of competitive race - a race against those nasty cancer cells that had invaded my body.

There were times during my treatment when I felt weak and defeated, but I just kept thinking about crossing that finish line.

Luckily, I had fantastic doctors, nurses, medical experts, family and friends to assist me on the race course back to health. There were times during my treatment when I felt weak and defeated, but I just kept thinking about crossing that finish line. I will never forget all the amazing women who shared their stories with me and gave me tips for succeeding, as only survivors could.

I’ve woken up to the reality that life is precious and short. I’ve learned to enjoy the simple things in life and spend more time laughing and having fun. I’ve also decided that this year I’m going to conquer another big race – my very first marathon!
