About ten months ago, I had a suspicious mammogram. After another mammogram and a biopsy, the doctor told me I had breast cancer. Fortunately, I have yearly mammograms so they were able to catch it early. It was barely in stage one and my tumor was about the size of a dime when they found it. The radiation has helped to shrink it down to the size of a pea. This weekend they are going to do laser surgery to remove the tumor. I decided early on in my treatment to donate my time at the hospital to help other cancer patients. Helping others has helped my process as well. Whether you share your personal story or just listen, it is so rewarding.
I hope to touch at least one person with my story.
My mother just passed away from cancer and I lost my grandmother to cancer, so it has been very strong in my family. I’m just determined to be positive. Of course it helps to have a wonderfully supportive husband and a work family that has always been there for me. Going to hospital support groups and staying active in my church helps me stay strong, too. Hearing the word “cancer” is not a death sentence. With the technology and medicine we have today it’s simply not true. When you are around other people who are going through the same thing, often their problems are so much worse than yours, which helps to keep things in perspective. I constantly feel blessed since things could always be worse. You’ve got to keep a positive attitude because if you give into it, that’s it. I hope to touch at least one person with my story. If there is someone out there going through the early stages of treatment and my story helps, it would mean the world to me.
