I had learned that I had breast cancer through my annual mammogram. Our store was going through a remodel and the appointment had to be rescheduled three times. Lucky for me I didn’t have to wait. There was no history of the disease in my family. I had a hysterectomy four years prior and was in hormone therapy, which probably was the cause of my cancer. Prior to being diagnosed with breast cancer, I knew very little about it. I had two lymph nodes that were positive, so my treatment was six months of chemotherapy and one year of Herceptin.
The most important thing I learned about myself through this experience was that, I AM a strong woman!
My family (my 3 sons) and friends were there for every chemo treatment. My store was a phone call away. Any need I had was met. I am on a team that does store décor for new and remodeled stores; my first store after surgery and while having chemo was memorable. I spent a lot of the first day letting people know I was going to make it. It was wonderful to know so many people cared.
The most important thing I learned about myself through this experience was that, I AM a strong woman! I feel great today. There are days you know that you are not the same, but for the most part I am doing well. The ‘words of wisdom’ that I have for other women facing this disease are, listen to your body, it will tell you more than anything. You can get through this and beat it. I did and I have been cancer-free for two and a half years.
