My name is Brenda Nelson, and I am 44 years old. I was shocked when I was diagnosed with breast cancer five years ago, at the age of 39. Although cancer is prevalent in my family, I never expected to get it so young. My mother is a two-time breast cancer survivor, and her sister was diagnosed shortly before I was. In addition, I had two great aunts that passed away from breast cancer.
Knowing my family history, I learned to be cautious about my own health. When scar tissue appeared on a routine mammogram, my doctor and I decided to perform a biopsy, just to make sure I was ok. The biopsy found a tumor beneath the scar tissue, undetectable by my mammogram.
After undergoing a double mastectomy, I went through three months of chemotherapy, which was very difficult on my family. My sons, Bryce and Lucas, were nine and seven at the time and seeing me without hair and being sick was very hard for them. I explained to them what I was going through, and I tried to include them as much as possible. I even let them help me shave my head, and they buzzed their hair to match me.
Going through breast cancer was extremely difficult, but I was very fortunate to have great friends, neighbors, family members and co-workers who were all right there for me. I learned how truly gracious and compassionate people could be. The little things they did to show their support made all the difference in the world. From cooking dinner for my family, to offering to pick up my sons from school, people stepped up in the most unexpected ways. Friends would drop by with cards and flowers, or they'd come over to keep me company when I wasn't feeling well – anything they could do to brighten my day.
Through my experience, I was able to feel the compassion and support of others, and it touched me so deeply. Now, it's my turn to give back to others – and I feel very strongly about that. Never underestimate how important small gestures can be when a friend or loved one is going through a difficult time. It's the little things that make all the difference!
